Valerian essential oil (Oleum Valerianae) is obtained through steam distillation of rhizomes with the roots of Valerian officinalis-Valeriana officinalis L. (valerian family – Valerianaceae).
Distribution of the plant
in the European part, in the Caucasus, in Western Siberia and in many regions of Eastern Siberia and the Far East. Widely cultivated. Pharmaceutical raw materials are obtained almost exclusively from large specialized farms.
Valerian essential oil properties
Greenish-yellow or brown-yellow liquid with a sharp characteristic sour smell with a somewhat unpleasant tone. The appearance of an unpleasant odor when storing the oil is associated with the accumulation of isovaleric acid, which is the product of the hydrolysis of the main component of the oil, bornilovazolerate. Over time, the precipitate of borneol may precipitate.

Boronyl isovalerate, bornilbutyrate, bornyl formate, bornilacetate, and also pinene, terpineol, cymene, camphene, isovaleric acid, valerenol, borneol.
Valerian oil benefits
Soothing, antispasmodic, anticonvulsant, easy analgesic and anti-inflammatory. Strengthens the processes of inhibition in the cerebral cortex and reduces reflex excitability.
Valerian essential oil uses
Stress, nervous exhaustion, neuroses, fears, irritability, depression, hysteria, insomnia, child hyperexcitability, migraine, epilepsy, heartburn, peptic ulcer and duodenal ulcer, flatulence, intestinal colic, colitis, constipation, cardioneurosis, tachycardia, hypersensitivity skin to external factors, neurodermatitis and other psychosomatic disorders.
Valerian oil recipes
- To make a bath 10 drops of essential oil (for children 5 drops) add in 30-50 ml of milk, cream or dissolve in a small amount of ethyl alcohol. Prepared emulsion or alcohol solution pour into the bath. Take a bath for 15 minutes before bedtime (especially indicated for epilepsy in children). The procedure is carried out every other day.
- To prepare a massage mixture of 5 drops of essential oil, dissolve in 10 ml of fatty basis.
For flavoring of tobacco products, soft drinks, liqueurs. Oil and absolute are used in the manufacture of soap and air fresheners as a perfume with the scents of wood and moss.
Valerian oil blends well with following oils
Valerian oil blends with oils of rosewood, as well as pettgegrain, tangerine, patchouli, pine, lavender essential oils.
It should be borne in mind that in case of an overdose or prolonged use it is possible to reduce mental and physical activity, weakening of attention, oppression of the general condition, the appearance of drowsiness, headache and nausea, violation of cardiac activity and digestion, and sometimes overexcitation.
These side effects disappear with a reduced dose or a temporary cessation of treatment. Do not use oil before doing anything that requires concentration and attention.
