How To Make Essential Oils – Proper harvesting of raw materials

Aroma butter can be extracted from almost any vegetation, whether it’s a wild shrub or a noble flower from a flower garden. But before making essential oils at home from a selected plant, it should be clarified in which part of it is concentrated the maximum amount of fragrant substances.

To obtain a quality final product, it is important not only to know how to make essential oil, but also when it is necessary to harvest raw materials for it. In this there is nothing complicated, it is enough to remember several of the following rules: If inflorescences are used to extract fragrant oils, then they are cut at the peak of flowering, choosing fully opened flowers. Rhizomes are excavated only in autumn, with the beginning of leaf drying. In the case of stems or leaves, the raw material is harvested prior to the bud formation. Seeds and fruits take only fully ripened. If the entire surface part of the plant is suitable for processing, then the optimal time for collection is the initial stage of flowering. Raw materials are harvested only in dry, sunny weather immediately after dew drying. For the preparation of oils suitable as fresh plants, and dried herbs.

Spinning and distillation

The simplest and quickest way to obtain aroma oil, which does not require any additional devices and extra costs, is spinning. But it is good only in the case of citrus fruits. The essence of this method is to manually squeeze an oily liquid from the rind of the fruit.

Any raw material, other than fruits and seeds, can be used to extract odorous oil from plants by distillation. The drawback of this method is that it will not be possible to do with improvised means – for distillation a special distillation apparatus is needed, similar to that used for the preparation of domestic alcohol.
